An essential tool for those applying for Ofcom sound broadcasting (radio) licences, Radica offers a computer-based coverage prediction service which shows the potential coverage area that may be reached by a transmitter operating from a chosen location. An easy to understand colour printout depicts a map of the area concerned, over-layed with coloured squares which represent varying predicted signal strength levels.
Information about the transmission site (including antenna height, polarisation and pattern, power etc.) is analysed by computer and, using a terrain database with a typical resolution of 50 metres, a 'coverage plot' is then produced, taking into account buildings and ground cover to ensure a high degree of accuracy.
Recent census information can be used to provide a breakdown of the population within each signal strength band, giving an accurate prediction of a potential audience. Such information helps pre-launch business planning, and is of great use to sales and marketing departments.
Radica plots are specifically tailored to the needs of FM broadcasters. Essential information is clearly presented and the prediction methodology and layout is acceptable to Ofcom as part of a licence application.
